„Diament Meblarstwa 2021“ - SURTECO once again awarded
„Diament Meblarstwa 2021“ - SURTECO once again awarded

SURTECO as an expert in the fields of creative design and high quality surface design is succesfull over and over again. The latest award SURTECO won, is the first price of the well-known „Diament Meblarstwa 2021“ in the area of surfaces. The polish magazine Biznes Meble PL awards this price every year since 2006. The „Diament Meblarstwa“ is internationally known. Here the best products in the furniture- and interior design industry are judged in terms of design, technology and functionality. SURTECO collected the „Diament Meblarstwa 2021“ with the decor San Sebastian. Classic and interspersed with veins, this marble design is reminiscent of one of the most sought-after Spanish natural stones, the Nero Marquino. The plain sections of the stone decor appear calm and pure. In order to underscore the natural character of the quarz inclusions, the strong veins, in particular, can be partially coloured. Due to this properties San Sebastian is perfectly suitable for worktops, fronts and tables. Do you want to find out more about San Sebastian? SURTECO Highlights for the caravan industry
SURTECO Highlights for the caravan industry

One of our highlights this year was the SEDATECS surface with its outstanding anti-fingerprint properties. The newly developed solid colours with SEDATECS surface also impress with a convincing supermatt finish. "Over a year we deal with the different manufacturers and models and then develop our own designs especially for this market.“ Valentina Dedi, Designerin With the elegant walnut decor San Marco and the calm oak Cape Town, our design team has met the ravages of time. Specially developed for the mobile travelling industry, our decors are convincing and will already be seen in the first vehicles next year. The successful Haithabu decor is also gaining momentum with new colours. This impression provides a felt finish that introduces a textile decor into the caravan over a large surface. A real innovation. Cape Town Design characteristics: Understated planking, slender light flowers, small knotty buds, clear and filigree pore outlines Application: Furniture, caravans, doors The calm oak decor Cape Town features understated planking, slender light flowers and small knotty buds. Clear and filigree pore outlines define the appearance and provide the decor with a stunning depth effect. The associated haptic cylinder supports this three-dimensional impression. A supplementary metallic effect further augments the texture. The well-balanced furniture decor is ideal for use on small and large surfaces, in the caravan sector and for the door industry. San Marco Design characteristics: Striated, elegant, meandering movements, free of knots, gentle play of colour, refined pore pattern Anwendung: Furniture, doors, caravans and interior design Striated and calm with meandering movements, emulating a stream in nature. San Marco is an elegant walnut decor with a gentle play of colour and refined pore pattern. It recalls the picturesque city of the lagoon – Venice – with its canals and palaces created in the Renaissance and Gothic era. The decor was inspired by the elegance of the impressive edifices in the city’s San Marco quarter, who lent his name to our design. The noble creation is free of knots and it features an aura of naturalness and upscale value. The characteristics are highlighted by an additional haptic and metallic cylinder. The perfect combination of surface and edge is also becoming increasingly important in caravans. That is why we have already worked out our designs in the various SURTECO products. The edge as an innovative set-off for a work top for example as a 3D edge or the design development Compact-Style were also topics at the Caravan Salon 2020. "It was important for us as a market leader to be present in this special time and we are very satisfied with the discussions and especially with the decor presentations.“ Mathias Giggenbach, Sales Director Due to Corona, with significantly fewer exhibitors and visitors, the trade fair was nevertheless a complete success for SURTECO. With its innovative surfaces and individual designs, SURTECO is making a decisive contribution to the transformation of caravan interiors. Camping is not a new living concept, but mobile living is currently experiencing an enormous up-swing. SURTECO welcomes 19 junior employees
SURTECO welcomes 19 junior employees

The training year 2020 has been, and is still strongly influenced by the effects of the Covid-19 Crisis. The new challenges are enormous. "However, we were able to continue our training activities without interruption. Thanks to the company hygiene concept and digital media, we developed solutions that enable a smooth education process," says Birgit Volmer, Head of Training at SURTECO. The young professionals anticipate an in-house instruction with social distance, team trainings, digital workshops and an exchange of trainees within the German company sites. On their first working day, the young talents started a company rally in Buttenwiesen. They used a questionnaire to explore the premises. A godfather from the second or third training year is actively side by side with each new employee. With a joint workshop on "rights and obligations in training" and a subsequent company tour, the trainees of Gladbeck introduced their new colleagues. In Sassenberg, a culinary social gethering of the entire junior team took place. As a recognized training company, SURTECO currently employs 82 trainees throughout Germany. The specialist for surface design and technology offers a varied apprenticeship with many exciting projects to young talents. SURTECO attaches great importance to independent work by simultaneously intense promotion. We are looking forward to our new team-mates, which we may accompany in their training over the next 2 - 3.5 years.

Design experience: Charles de Gaulle Airport
Design experience: Charles de Gaulle Airport

SURTECO product designer Valentina Dedi is on her way to America and is stopping over at Paris Charles de Gaulle. She is sitting in Terminal 2 at the champagne bar of the first Michelin-starred restaurant in the airport. Time to take stock in a moving and lively location that was built many decades ago but is still bang on-trend. No matter where you stop in this airport, you feel the impressive, timeless design in the overall formal language and furnishings. Although, here in particular, time plays an important role. Every process, the overall procedure, arrival, departure, it is all about time. And yet the place where all that takes place is so detached from it. This airport was constructed in the 1970s, and yet it seems so modern to us now. There is Terminal 1, which has become legendary because of its futuristic design and Camembert shape. And here at Terminal 2 there are huge open spaces and the exciting glass roof construction, which lets in lots of light. The formal language is simple and clear, with no frills. At the same time, there are pillars and marble elements that provide opulence and class. This mix of minimalism and class can be found today, too. Our mobile, digitised age demands functionality, which requires simplicity. At the same time, a special quality is desired. Charles De Gaulle Airport combines the two. The airport was designed by Paul Andreu, a world-famous airport architect. He said: ‘An airport is more than a building. It is a landscape.’ That is a lovely image that we also work with in our Design department. In other words: we think big, not small. Even if, at the end of the day, a room is designed or a building constructed – the concept must be overarching. In this way, we create openness and expanse in the architecture and, ultimately, in the room. The term ‘landscape’ also wonderfully summarises what is going on here. The urban intertwines with the natural. We can see that here at the airport in the use of lots of green spaces. And in the bars and cafes there is frequently use of dark, exquisite woods, combined with brass. We are all connected to nature and yet we live in urban environments. And in that very urban situation, we want to feel these roots in nature. Paul Andreu was conscious of that back then, as we are now. The story behind our ash decor "Belarus"
The story behind our ash decor "Belarus"

We develop a design out of real trends and stories. It is only with this combination that we create a holistically convincing product that brings rooms to life. That goes much further than “we do design”. With Esche Belarus, we have created a decor with a unique character. It combines everything the urban person longs for: honesty, the joy of nature, meaning. For a very special and pleasant comfort. The high demand is already demonstrating that this decor appeals to the current zeitgeist. ‘Esche Belarus is an all-rounder in the furniture sector. It impresses in combination with modern colours, as well as stone and metal looks, and, at the same time, conveys its fresh naturalness to the ambience of the room.’ Just like here in the SURTECO Design Factory. And soon in the middle of the city. Then it will no longer be necessary to pack your suitcase when you want more nature – you can simply head to the living room. Breathe in. Breathe out. Switch off. Before you step outside into the city centre and get back to everyday life. Read the whole story and other stories behind our decors in our Design Stories .

The origin as a constant
Ancient wine culture makes its way into new living worlds.
The origin as a constant Ancient wine culture makes its way into new living worlds.

The Origin An Inspiration An antique wine press welcomes us in the entrance area of the exhibition, surrounded by old brick walls and in the light of a huge industrial lamp. The dark spots of coloration on the wood tell the story of the many hard-working hands that left behind their sweat on the press from working to turn thousands of grapes into precious wine. The upper beams of this very antique press – the oak planks – gave rise to a new decor: Noa. The name of the decor is an allusion to the legend of Noah. According to this legend, Noah ran ashore at the foot of Mount Ararat in the borderlands between Turkey and Armenia. There – on the slopes of the mountain – Noah planted the first grapevines and took pleasure in the juice of the grapes. Thousands of years later – here in Milan – we are following his example and enjoying the world of grapes. The Path A Development We walk past the wine press into the interior of the exhibition space and look in awe upon the giant strips of paper hanging freely from the ceiling. Images of wine cultivation can be seen on the paper: juicy grapes, a vintner, dark-green mountainsides covered in vines. Wine is an artisan craft, touching nature, part of human history and a uniquely enjoyable experience. All the stories about wine resulted in a new decor with a one-of-a-kind character: the oak impression is characterised by cracks, signs of wear and a freshly sawn look, as well as weathering and a patina of genuine wine stains. The history of wine cultivation was translated onto the decor, where the story continues. And we continue further into the exhibition. The New A Constant Having blazed a trail through the world of Noa, the decor is brought into the space. A bar – covered with the Noa decor from the surface through to each and every edge – welcomes you to a glass of wine. The guests are chatting happily. Italian words are sprinkled throughout the English, French, Japanese and German conversations. We place our hand on the decor. We are touched by the newness, because it has sprung forth from something very familiar to us. Our very own history. Regardless of where we’re from and where we are – we understand. So, to us! Prost! Salute! Cheers! 乾杯! Santé! Read more about the stories b ehind our decors in our Design Stories .

Expanding imagination spaces
Jörg Dietz and his team turn trends into innovative designs
Expanding imagination spaces Jörg Dietz and his team turn trends into innovative designs

1 // Mr Dietz, let’s go back to square one. You have been Head of Design at SURTECO since the end of last year. Which challenges come with this position at the largest decor and surface specialist? We conceive and develop new designs for nearly all surfaces in interior design. That means that we have to be prepared to cater for a wide range of customer groups with their very own trend ideas, needs and technical requirements. This diversity is complicated, but at the same time the most important driver of our work. 2 // You are on familiar footing in the sectors concerned. With your design agency Dietz Produktgestaltung, you have been providing important designs for the kitchen and furniture industries for 15 years. Your wife is now running the agency on her own, while you are focusing purely on your new responsibilities. To what extent does SURTECO benefit from your wealth of experience? What’s interesting for the company is that I look at things from the perspective of the customer, the developer and the designer from the furniture industry. I know the parameters for deciding whether a design is appropriate for a defined task or not. At SURTECO, new ideas come from the relationship between the products and the substrates underneath them, and this is where I can provide important impetus. 3 // One of your first ideas for SURTECO – the unicolour ‘Compact Style’ front and edge, which simulates a coloured laminate with a natural-looking inlaid panel – has already been honoured with the German Design Award as well as other distinctions. Which factors played a key role in the development of the product? When it comes to prefabricated furniture parts, the edge is often an element that is meant to integrate itself into the colour and surface design. With Compact Style, we took it in a different direction: we made the edge the hero, providing the decisive design aspect to the prefabricated furniture part. 4 // How do you go about discovering new trends? That is an extremely complex part of our work. We start by making sure that we are very well informed. To do so, we consult various media as well as visit trade fairs, congresses and events. But above all we carefully observe societal trends and new design topics, and then take these impressions, impulses and ideas and combine them. Then we evaluate these based on their relevance to the market. 5 // Not everything is a genuine trend. When do you know if you are right? Actually, the trends that win out can often be recognised relatively early on. There is a fairly quick response to these trends which is often spontaneous and emotional. 6 // Let’s use the Synnect trend as an example: how do you ultimately take a trend like that and turn it into a new decor? When we describe a trend, this also results in assumptions about what effect this trend may have under certain circumstances or how, for example, it will manifest itself in fashion or interior design. This results, in a way, in a picture of this trend, which is then answered through new ideas and concrete drafts. Within the ‘Synnect’ trend, this picture shows, among other things, raw steel surfaces – which served as the stimulus for the ‘Rocket’ decor. 7 // What does the living of the future look like? It’s certainly going to change. Urban living is trendy at the moment. Accordingly, the living situation in cities is changing, because certain neighbourhoods are compressing in order to make more intensive use of space and to add more levels of living space. New types of living together are arising from sharing concepts and new multigenerational models. And the demand for sustainability – and the associated environmentally friendly handling of resources – is changing the living of the future. Furniture will perhaps once again be of greater quality, because people want to use it over a longer period of time. 8 // The Design Factory was opened in 2017 – what exactly happens there and what are the services that can be found behind that name? The Design Factory visualises the diversity of possibilities within the company. It’s a workshop for our customers, where they can design and define their product down to the finest detail – all with the help of cutting-edge patterning tools. When the customer leaves, they can take with them a range of fleshed-out ideas as decision-making aids. 9 // A little glimpse of who you are personally: what object do you always have to have on your desk? My favourite pen. 10 // Where do you find your inspiration outside of your working space? Inspiration – regardless whether within the office or outside of it – can be found in different situations. When out walking in nature, visiting cities, travelling or sometimes even in the most everyday occasions. Inspiration is a continuous process that takes place through the use of all of your senses. It sometimes even happens that, during conversations with colleagues or friends, a completely new subject is brought up that has nothing to do with the current conversation, and that then has spontaneous results. 11 // What has moved you the most personally with regard to the recent design world? Right now at the Salone del Mobile.Milano: a return to the classics. I feel like we’re searching for guidance, because we have such great variety. One keyword in this regard is certainly the centennial of the Bauhaus movement. But I also saw other classic designs in modern reinterpretations. 12 // What do you hope to accomplish together with SURTECO? By connecting the substrates with each other, entirely new and exciting ideas are created that enable new solutions within development partnerships with our customers. This goes for all customer areas. This leads to, in addition to the design task for the individual product, the consideration of the finished product and giving thought to what this product can do even better. Jörg Dietz, thank you very much for taking the time to speak with me! Jörg Dietz, vielen lieben Dank für das Gespräch! Revival of textiles in living environments
Revival of textiles in living environments

The world of textiles is vast. As we get right up close and run our hands over the fabrics, we can have a chat about the material they are made from: cotton, velvet, felt, silk, linen. If we take a step back, we can look at the colours and patterns: azure blue, pearl white, geometric lines, floral shapes. And if we change our perspective once again and look at the big picture as a whole, we can see the stories the fabrics are trying to tell. The textile reveals cultural and historical aspects, as well as artistic and handicraft skills. And once again a new trend for our era: a longing for tradition, handicraft and a sense of feel. If you want to discover new trends, you need to be right in the middle of the action. In the middle of life, in the middle of society. Observing, changing perspectives and seeing connections. The evidence of these kinds of observations can be found on Luisa Kästle’s desk: catalogues, magazines, objects. And two important pieces of equipment that she must keep with her at all times. “I always have my camera and notebook with me. They help me to capture everything worth noting and everything that inspires me”, says Luisa as she swipes right on her iPad through the image gallery. Back to spring 2019. The photos are of fabrics. “This is where it all began with the latest new decor.” Right here. This is the “Spring fabric” in Munich on Prater Island. A retrospective. The whole conversation with our designer Luisa Kästle and what has inspired her to develop the decor Avril is readable in our Design Story .

Nunchi - a new lifestyle trend
Nunchi - a new lifestyle trend

KNOWING MORE THAN WHAT IS SAID Every room changes from one minute to the next. People’s states of mind are in permanent flux and objects never seem to stay in the same place either. All this has an influence on the bigger picture. The important thing about Nunchi is being able to perceive all of this new information as each minute goes by. Trends like Nunchi tend to set their own pace. They start by slowly seeping in – a post on social media, a new publication in the book store – then they get swept up in the momentum and all of a sudden they’re everywhere. In cities, businesses and in messages from friends: “Have you heard about Nunchi?” But Nunchi is about more than just a new kind of lifestyle. It’s a cultural concept of living, which has made its way to us from Korea to teach us something that is really quite primitive. That is, noticing our surroundings with all our senses, focussing not on ourselves but on the room as a whole. Nunchi is the concept of emotional intelligence, signifying the ability to register the thoughts and feelings of others, gauge the room as a whole and recognise the appropriate way to behave. Let’s take a look at two rooms and change them using Nunchi. Two introductions to “having a good Nunchi!” and what role is played by the decors and colors can be read in our Design Story.
